Father’s Day in Jacksonville, Florida

It wasn’t that long ago we talked about Mother’s Day here at iknowjax.com and I put together a long list of suggestions of what to do for Mother’s Day. There’s always a lot of special events and lunches and such for this special day, when it comes to Father’s Day, not so much. What’s up with that? Many Dads, myself included, are tired of being overlooked. Why are mother’s more important? Let 2012 be the year when we change that and let Father’s Day be at least equal to Mother’s Day in importance. (You can watch the video about Father’s Day by clicking here)

Here are a few suggestions of what to do with your Dad in Jacksonville (June 17):

Butterflies and Penguins at the Zoo
There’s a lot of new stuff at the Zoo that I haven’t had a chance to see yet. First, the Butterfly Hollow. I love butterflies and gardens, so I know I would really enjoy experiencing this exhibit.
Then there is the 4D ride called Mumble’s Wild Ride from the penguin movie Happy Feet. who can resist the funny penguins? In this ride you RACE down the frozen cliffs of Antarctica in a breathtaking icy action packed adventure wearing these dorky glasses. this sounds like a super COOL thing to do for the whole family for father’s day. And Dad’s get free admission to the zoo with the special coupon.  Here’s the link.

Just Chill with the Family
The weather has been kind of hot and muggy, so another cool thing to do for Father’s Day for the family is heading to the skating rink. No, I am not talking about rollerskating or rollerblading, I’m actually talking ice skating. For those of us who grew up in the south, ice is just a foreign unfamiliar substance, unless it comes in a glass of coke. And ice skating is definitely not a skill of mine. My wife, who is a snowbird, tells me I skate like a four year old. My ankles fold. But the rest of my family enjoys it, and I think they especially enjoy watching me hang on for dear life to the sideboards.

From 2 pm – 4pm the rink is open to the public at the Jacksonville Ice and Sportplex, so a good idea might be to skate before dinner to work up a great appetite. The two gentlemen I met from Edinborough Scotland who were here for the soccer game taught me about the importance of tea time. For them, that was beer time, and after spending 2 hours ice skating I know I will be prime and ready for a cold one.
You can ice skate at the Jacksonville Ice & sportsplex from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday June 17. Here’s the link.

Hole in One
If you’re Dad is a golf enthusiast, why not take a road trip to the World Golf of Village for Father’s Day. The World Golf Hall of Fame will offer complimentary admission to everyone who visits the museum. To celebrate the final round of the U.S. Open, the museum will be featuring its U.S. Open memorabilia with self-guided tours and storytellers in the building. Fathers will receive special gifts and enjoy free admission at the Hall’s 18-hole, natural-grass putting course. Contests will also be conducted throughout the day on the Hall of Fame’s Challenge Hole, indoor golf simulator and indoor putting green. The event takes place on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The World Golf Hall of Fame, St. Augustine. Here’s the link.
